Printing Arabic Receipts That Actually Read Correctly

You switch the POS to Arabic, print a test receipt, and what comes out is a row of boxes. Or the letters are right but sitting backwards. Or every letter is printed in its standalone form, so a word that should flow reads like someone spelled it out one character at a time. It is one of the most common complaints from café owners in the UAE, and the frustrating part is that the software usually looks fine on screen — it is the paper that is wrong.

Why it breaks: three separate problems that look the same

Almost every Arabic receipt fault is one of three things, and they produce different symptoms. Knowing which one you are looking at turns an unsolvable mystery into a specific question for your vendor.

  • Encoding. The printer has to be told which character table to use before Arabic bytes mean anything to it. Send Arabic to a printer still set to a Latin table and you get boxes, question marks or random Latin characters. Symptom: nothing recognisably Arabic at all.
  • Shaping. Arabic letters change form depending on where they sit in a word — initial, medial, final or standalone — and pairs of letters join into ligatures. Software that prints raw characters without shaping them produces letters that are individually correct but visually disconnected. Symptom: readable if you squint, but wrong and ugly.
  • Direction. Arabic runs right to left, and a line mixing Arabic with prices, quantities and Latin product codes has to lay out both directions correctly. Get this wrong and the words are perfect but the line order is reversed, or the total ends up on the wrong side. Symptom: correct letters, nonsense layout.

Text mode versus printing the receipt as an image

There are two ways a POS can put Arabic on paper. It can send text and rely on the printer's own built-in Arabic font and character table, or it can render the whole receipt as an image and send that. Text mode is faster and uses less paper feed, but it depends entirely on what the printer supports — and cheap printers vary wildly in how well they handle shaping and direction, if at all.

Rendering the receipt as an image is slower by a fraction of a second and produces the same result on every printer, because the layout is decided by the software rather than the hardware. For a café that prints hundreds of bilingual receipts a day, that consistency is usually worth more than the speed. If a vendor tells you Arabic "depends on your printer", they are telling you they use text mode — which is a fair answer, but it means the printer is now part of the decision.

How to test before you buy

Do not accept a screenshot. Ask for a printed receipt, on the printer you intend to use, containing all of the following — this is a ten-minute test that catches almost everything:

  1. A product with a long Arabic name, so you can see whether the letters join properly rather than sitting apart.
  2. A line that mixes Arabic and English — most café menus have items like "لاتيه Latte" — plus a quantity and a price on the same line.
  3. Arabic with numerals in it, since digits run left to right inside a right-to-left line and this is where layout usually falls apart.
  4. A long item name that wraps onto a second line, which is where direction bugs show up most clearly.
  5. The footer: your trade name, address and TRN in Arabic, since that is the part you cannot fix by renaming a menu item.
  6. A refund or a discounted line, because negative amounts inside an RTL line are a classic failure case.

Keep the printed sample. If Arabic breaks after an update six months later, you have proof of what it used to do.

A receipt is also a tax document

This is why it is not merely cosmetic. Your receipt is the record of the sale, and it has to carry specific information to count as a tax invoice — your details, the VAT amount, a sequential number. A receipt where the Arabic is unreadable is a weak document to hand a customer who wants to claim the input VAT, and an awkward one to produce if anyone asks questions later. The printer matters too

Even good software can be undone by the hardware. Some low-cost thermal printers have no Arabic character table at all; others have one but no shaping engine, which is exactly the disconnected-letters symptom above. Why does my POS print Arabic as boxes or question marks?

That is an encoding problem — the printer has not been told to use an Arabic character table, so it does not recognise the bytes it is being sent. It is a configuration or software issue rather than a broken printer, and your POS vendor should be able to fix it or tell you the printer does not support Arabic at all.

Why are the Arabic letters not joined on my receipts?

That is a shaping problem. Arabic letters change shape depending on their position in a word, and the software is printing each character in its standalone form instead of the correct connected one. Rendering the receipt as an image rather than as raw text is the usual fix.

Do I need a special Arabic receipt printer?

Not necessarily. If your POS renders the receipt as an image, any standard thermal printer will reproduce it correctly because the layout is decided by the software. If your POS sends plain text, then the printer's own Arabic support matters and you should test the exact model before buying several.

Should receipts be in Arabic, English or both?

That is your call, and plenty of UAE cafés print both. What matters is that whichever you choose prints correctly and carries the information a tax invoice needs. A bilingual receipt is only an advantage if both halves are legible.

Can I test Arabic printing during a POS demo?

You should insist on it. Ask the vendor to print a real receipt on the printer model you intend to use, with a long Arabic item name, a mixed Arabic and English line, numerals, and your Arabic trade name in the footer. Screenshots prove nothing about what the printer will do.

Arabic on a receipt is a solved problem — it is just solved in more than one place, and a system only prints correctly when the software, the character encoding and the printer all agree.
